First 24 hours in Melbourne

Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia is known for its great coffee.  After this morning's cappuccino, I heartily  agree.  Take a look for yourself:

The cappuccino was just one of this morning's breakfast highlights. Who knew that Tasmania has great lox??

Yes - in our first 24 hours, most of our time has been spent eating. Nothing wrong with that - it's a vacation.

This morning (between meals) we visited the Melbourne Cricket Grounds.  It was a most worthwhile visit.  We toured the 101,000 seat stadium and home to not only Cricket but also rugby, Australian Rules Football and the 1956 Olympics. But mostly, it's all about Cricket and its interesting history. We had a good tour guide:

He was very informative but we still have absolutely no idea how the game is played. Every time  we asked him about the game he said, "Cricket is not a game that can be explained in five minutes."  Apparently it couldn't be explained in 75 minutes - which was the length of the tour. Here are some photos:

The city of Melbourne is well worth a visit. It is an international town and the people we have met who live here are from all over the world. Everyone is extremely friendly - "g'day mate!" It is a modern town of big buildings and some unique modern architecture. (I'll try to get a photo tomorrow.) At the same time there are many old British buildings that remain scattered among the modern architecture. The view from our hotel room:

Tonight our tour officially starts and we will meet the people in our group. Tomorrow the serious sightseeing begins!

One more thing - here are some pictures of Emma and her parents in Jamaica which are so cute I had to include them:
